Pink Whipray

Food Preparation: Pink Whipray

This short film demonstrates a common preparation method for pink whipray, called 'marrkiki' in Iwaidja. The flesh of stingray when mixed with the fried liver is a much-loved and sought-after menu item in the diet of the coastal peoples of Western Arnhem Land.

The storyteller is Ngalwangardi aju Minjilang (1946-2012), a senior traditional owner of the Karturra clan. The video was filmed at Joy's house in Minjilang on Croker Island on the 9th of November 2004 by Bruce Birch. The video was collected as part of the Iwaidja Language Documentation Project funded by the DoBeS Program of the Volkswagen Foundation. The text was transcribed and translated by Bruce Birch and Ngalwangardi with joint funding from DoBeS and the Maintenance of Languages and Records (MILR) program of the the Australian Government.
