Mangambuk No.1

PLANT MEDICINE OF CROKER ISLAND NO.1

This poster is the first in a series showing commonly used medicinal plants from Croker Island and the Cobourg Peninsula in northwestern Arnhem Land. It is published in the Indigenous language Iwaidja, with English translations. Iwaidja is a highly endangered language spoken mainly at Minjilang on Croker Island.

Text in Iwaidja and English explains in detail the preparation and application of each medicinal plant in the treatment of various medical conditions. A core team of six Iwaidja-speaking consultants helped to record the collection, preparation and application of each medicinal plant, and worked also on the transcription and translation of the texts.

Glenn Wightman, ethnobiologist at the Herbarium of the Northern Territory Department of Natural Resources, Environment and The Arts, ensured the accuracy of the scientific and English common names of the plants. The poster is published by Iwaidja Inyman, a community project funded by the Australian Government through the Maintenance of Indigenous Languages and Records (MILR) program. Production was financially administered by Jabiru Town Council.

All profit from sales of this poster will go to the Iwaidja language team for recording and publishing their endangered cultural knowledge. Your support will help maintain the linguistic and cultural diversity of northwestern Arnhem Land.
