Manbiri lda Ngunjurl
ISBN 1-74131-033-4 THE STORY OF THE GREEN SEA TURTLE AND LONG-NECKED TURTLE This traditional story is published in Iwaidja. It includes English translations and comes with a narration on audio CD. Iwaidja is a highly endangered language spoken mainly at Minjilang on Croker Island in northwestern Arnhem Land. The story is about two brothers, Manbiri the green sea turtle and Ngunjurl the long-necked turtle, who exchange their fat and go their separate ways. It takes place at Didit on the western side of Croker Island between a large floodplain and the sea. This is the country of the Gardurra and Minaka clans. Today, you can still see the place where the brothers sat down together and the tracks they made when they left, one for the sea and the other for the floodplain. All profit from sales of this book will go to the Iwaidja language team for recording and publishing their endangered cultural knowledge. Your support will help maintain the linguistic and cultural diversity of northwestern Arnhem Land.
