Ilijili is a fluent speaker of both Iwaidja and Mawng, with a high level of competence in Kunwinjku. She is of the Marrku-speaking Marndildarri clan, whose estates lie on Croker Island. Her mother was Alice Kunwakil, a Garig speaker of the Nganyjaharr clan from the Kurlkurlng (Danger Point) area of the Cobourg Peninsula.

Ilijili was married to Australia's first Indigenous Methodist minister, the Reverend Lazarus Lamilami, and has spent the past 50 years moving between Croker Island and neighbouring Goulburn Island. She has five children and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Ilijili plays an important role in the maintenance of her language and culture, instilling in the younger generations of her family her own insatiable appetite for hunting and spending time on country.
